"What we still don't understand is why you Americans stopped the bombing
of Hanoi. You had us on the ropes. If you had pressed us a little harder, just for another day or two, we were
ready to surrender! It was the same at the battles of TET. You defeated us! We knew it, and we thought you
knew it. But we were elated to notice your media were definitely helping us. They were causing more disruption
in America than we could in the battlefields. We were ready to surrender. You had won!"

Four months after the 5th Marines were pulled
out of their An Hoa Combat Base in Vietnam; the Duc Duc Refugee Village, which was located next to the American
base, was massacred by Vietnamese terrorists. I served in this village. Please don't let a premature military
pullout trigger more deaths to America's friends and supporters...

Regarding the last paragraph,
I feel a short comment on who Jack Cunningham is and why I am here today at 55 instead of dead at 19.
Some time in July 1970, we went
on a (daily) patrol that took us farther into enemy territory than ever before. The temperature this day was in excess of
100 º. With only three (3) Marines and 1 Chou Hoi, we confiscated a large cache
of Vietnamese communist terrorists (V.C) explosives, detonators, documents and battle plans for upcoming engagements. (This most probably was a small terrorist bobby-trap factory.)
After neutralizing their base
camp, we were hit by Viet Cong terrorists’ rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and small arms fire, pinning us down for
over an hour. We called for artillery from the Marine Cops’ 5th
Marines Combat base at An Hoa and a react team from our brother CAP team 2-9-1. Return artillery fire was immediate.
It took CAP 2-9-1 a while to reach us, because as they neared the tree line that we were pinned down in, they were
also fired upon.
After about three hours, the
V.C. broke contact and both CAP teams started back to their respective villages. We had to cross a chest deep river, carrying
our weapons over our heads, but at least we were in our own back yard. We stopped on a small knoll for much needed water,
since we had run out of water hours before, because of the intense heat and sun. Two
Marines and I filled everyone’s canteens while Jack and the rest of the patrol stood cover.
Returning from the well, I saw
Jack standing cover by himself, as Sgt. Eiford thought the village might be hit and took the rest of the unit back with him
in case of enemy contact. As we made our way to the knoll that Jack was on, we
took heavy fire from our right, pinning us down behind a small rice paddy dike. Jack
then exposed himself to enemy fire to try and keep the V.C. away from us, switching from his own M79 grenade launcher, to
my M-16 rifle and one of the Marines’ M-60 machine gun. Jack kept the V.C.
off balance long enough for us to pull ourselves along by the rice stalks until reaching him.
The V.C. broke contact, probably fearing an artillery attack.
This was Jack, always caring
and making sure the people he loved were safe and protected from harm. Jack’s code in life has always been the same:
passion for his family, his country and the Corps. I will always be thankful for being a part of Jack’s family.

The United States Marines are using the Combined Action
Program (CAP) more and more in this War on Terror. It's a great program to serve in, but personally, I thought
it was some scary stuff... During the Vietnam War, I served on CAP 2-9-2 in the Duc Duc Resettlement Village from about the end of April 1970 to August 14, 1970.
We actually had bounties on our heads. The local
Viet Cong terrorists offered about $1,000, if a Vietnamese peasant killed an American. Some Marines had
higher prices on their heads. (My head was worth about $12.53 ) We
made it into a joke... (Another thing to tease each other about.)
At the time, the Viet Cong were offering about $1,000 per
American in my village, an average rice farmer was making about $600 a year. Flashing $1,000 should have motivated
a lot of poor Vietnamese peasants, but it did not. Instead, the peasants supported us with intelligence against
the communists.
The terrorists really had the money to pay the peasants,
because I was on the operation outside my village, when we found thousands of dollars in Vietnamese and American currency. My Cap Team was out there with a company of grunts and two tanks from the Fifth Marines. The South Vietnamese and American cash was donated to the communists by a California
State College student union. On that same operation, we found other supplies
donated to the terrorists by the same American College student union. (You can read more details
about CAP at the program's two official websites: http://www.capmarine.com & http://www.cap-assoc.org )
Here's just one thing that still stands out in my mind.
In one portion of our village, if communists entered the village at night, peasant families would start banging pots to warn
the American Marines.
Because of President Nixon's troop pullout, the U.S. Marines
returned total responsibility of the An Hoa Valley back to the South Vietnamese military by November 1970. I served
on the last CAP Team of the Duc Duc Resettlement Village. CAP 2-9-2 left the village in the
middle of August 1970.
By January
& February 1971, Senator John Kerry, Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland and their friends were telling The World on television; and in magazines and in newspapers
that Americans in Vietnam were burning down villages and killing babies as a normal part of their responsibilities.
It was all great
cover and diversion for what was really happening in Vietnam.

*************
The below history of my peasant village was written BY ALAN WAUGH
http://home.earthlink.net/~ducducvietnamfriends/an_unknown_massacre_in_vietnam/id8.html
The first two weeks of March 1971
saw an increase in enemy activity in the province of Quang Nam. Da Nang took 16 rockets in an attack on 4th March. Throughout the An Hoa basin patrols made contact with small groups of VC or NVA.
III MAF using recovered enemy
documents knew that the Communists were planning a new offensive called the K-850 Campaign. The
objectives of the campaign were to attack district Headquarters, PF & RF positions, CUPP and CAP units. Da Nang would also get its fair share of rockets .
During K-850 the VC/NVA put a
lot of pressure on the Vietnamese forces and their pacification program. On 27th
March the 1st Marine Division put all its units on alert against foreseen rocket attacks.
On the night of the 28th Da Nang
which was shrouded in low cloud came under rocket attack along with nearby allied positions.
In the province the enemy attacked
Duc Duc, Dai Loc, Dien Ban, and the Que Son District Headquarters. They also
attacked CUPP and CAP hamlets and refugee resettlement hamlets. Bridges and highways
in the province were also attacked.
Early on the morning of the 29th at 0210 two battalions of the
NVA 38th Regiment along with two VC sapper battalions charged into Duc Duc while their mortars and rockets roared in. The District HQ compound was the NVA’s primary target. Meanwhile the VC sappers attacked the nearby hamlets destroying everything in their path. BY ALAN WAUGH
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the end, there
were hundreds and hundreds of innocent men, women and children killed and wounded in the Duc Duc Resettlement Village. It was estimated that up to 2,000 Duc Duc Resettlement homes were intentionally
burned by the Vietnamese communist terrorists.
Personally, I
think the primary target of the communist Vietnamese attack was the Duc Duc Resettlement Village. The destruction
and casualties tell the real story. The people of the Duc Duc Resettlement Village were punished for supporting the Marines of An Hoa Valley. Their
quiet banging-pots found in the ashes of the village will attest to it…
During March, April and
the rest of 1971, Senator John Kerry, Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland and their friends were telling The World on television; and in magazines and
in newspapers that Americans in Vietnam were burning down villages and killing babies as a normal part of their responsibilities.
The American Marines had many Vietnamese friends
who once lived in Duc Duc… We never had to burn it down once. But when I got home, around
February 1971, a friend of mine innocently asked me how many babies did the Marines have to kill in my village.
A few years
ago, I built a website dedicated to the people of the Duc Duc Resettlement Village. Although, the
American News Media did not cover the massacre back in April 1971, the website has received about 30,000 visitors. It's
my little part in keeping the memory of the people of Duc Duc alive...
I think you would find it very interesting to see what stories
the American News Media was pushing in March and April 1971.
