Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
results from exposure to an overwhelming stressful event or series of events. A response by normal people to abnormal
situation > the symptoms make perfect sense, because what happened has overwhelmed normal coping responses. Following
exposure to traumatic events~such as natural disasters, abuse, crime, accident,
rape, war etc.~ millions of people develop PTSD with symptoms raging from
nightmares to headaches, flashbacks, withdrawing from people, profound sadness, anxiety, anger, guilt, fatigue, pessimism,
sexual problems and emotional numbing.
Traumas happen to many competent, healthy, strong, good people. No one can completely protect him- or
herself from traumatic experiences.
Many people have long-lasting problems following exposure to trauma. Up to 8% of individuals will have
PTSD at some time in their lives.
People who react to traumas are not going crazy. They are experiencing symptoms and problems
that are connected with having been in a traumatic situation.
Having symptoms after a traumatic event is not a sign of personal weakness. Many psychologically well-adjusted and physically healthy
people develop PTSD. Probably everyone would develop PTSD if they were exposed to a severe enough trauma.
When a person understands trauma symptoms better, he or she can become less fearful of them and better
able to manage them.
By recognizing the effects of trauma and knowing more about symptoms, a person
is better able to decide about getting treatment.
Research indicates early intervention after a traumatic event can reduce the symptoms of post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD). That’s why the more we know about PTSD, the more effective we can be as social workers to help people
overcome and cope with this mental health condition. June 27 is PTSD Awareness
Day, which was established last year by the Senate to raise public awareness about PTSD. Awareness first starts with
understanding what something is, where it comes from and how it can be treated. This
“What is PTSD?” infographic outlines the symptoms, causes and treatments for the various types of traumatic events,
and we hope this serves as a good starting point to spread awareness. http://msw.usc.edu/mswusc-blog/national-post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd-
