Everyone has heard of George
Washington and Valley Forge
Winter
Encampment of 1777 – 1778
What happened at Valley
Forge is a great reminder of the sacrifices of early American patriots in their drive for liberty and freedom,
even against terrible odds. But few Americans remember George
Washington’s and the Continental Army other winters. They were just
as severe.
The year before Valley
Forge and two winters after, General Washington and his army spent in and around Morristown,
New Jersey. In 1777, Washington
headquartered in the center of Morristown at the Green in Jacob Arnold’s
Tavern.
The tavern is long gone, but
the feeling of patriotism and freedom still live on the Green at Morristown, New
Jersey. Today, the Green has a memorial statue that celebrates
a meeting between General Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Marquis de Lafayette.
The Green links local history
as well as history of the United States. On April 15, 2009 at noon, the Green will again be linked to the history of America’s
Freedoms. A citizens group, the Morristown Tea Party, will be holding a
rally and celebration of Liberty and Freedoms at the site of General George
Washington’s Continental Army’s headquarters.
Come, and be part of American
history.
