The U.S. Congress Is Ready To Put America's Most Disabled
Veterans Below The Poverty Level. Is this how you want your Federal Politicians to repay those, who have sacrificed
so much for you, your family and America?
Personally, I think this is a total disgrace to even form the
Commission to plan such an act. I'd love to know, who are the federal politicians, who are supporting this Commission
of Disgrace.
Since I paid into Social Security for 18 years, with many of those years
at the maximum rate of deduction, it should not be constitutional that this Commission can deny me Social Security Disability,
because I receive VA benefits. John "Jack" Cunningham
On May 19, 2006 the Veterans Disability Benefits Commission will vote
whether to recommend a payment offset to Veterans Administration benefits. This will be a decrease in compensation to
DISABLED VETERANS. Young Disabled Veterans starting a family will be impacted greatly.
The recommendation could
mean that the disabled Veteran will receive only one payment (whichever is higher) but not both. This means that the
Veteran will not receive a disability check from the Social Security Administration and the Veterans Administration benefits
check. Those Veterans receiving full VA benefits could lose their Social Security Check if its lower.
The Commission members are appointed by the President (President George
Bush) and leaders of Congress, and the Commission is independent of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department
of Defense. Email the Comission and tell them to do the right thing for the veterans.

COPY OF
A LETTER TO PRESIDENT BUSH'S COMMISSION
Gentleman I urge you not to recommend
the changes to VA and Social Security laws that would put the vast majority of Veterans who are disabled below the poverty
level. This move would be a slap in the face of all veterans who faithfully served this country in all branches of the
services and in the course of their service became disabled. To place an additional financial burden on them and their families
will be a travesty, and a betrayal to their service in past, present and future wars.
I know that should these recommended
changes be passed by the House and Senate I and all Veterans in my State, and District will keep a close watch on our Senators
and congressman's votes in this matter.
Again I urge you not to take the expected action, No for any personal reason
even tho I'm 100% P&T thru the VA for PTSD, and am receiving my SSI.
Gentlemen I know what it is to live
on a fixed income, and it took a lot of pride swallowing to apply for these benefits, but when you lose a career because of
reasons that at a young age were beyond my/our control in various war zones we went uncomplaining because we were soldiers,
and proudly served this great nation, only to learn 36 years later that my service amounts to number crunching or whatever
motivation "someone" dreamed up is an insult to me, and all other Veterans who proudly served this Nation.
I have already
contacted my Senators and Congressman with my views and hopes in this matter and you may contact me at the following address
and phone number.

(American) Legion vows fight in commission attempt to tap social security benefits for veterans’
disabilities.
INDIANAPOLIS (May 10, 2006) - The board of directors of the nation’s largest veterans organization
today unanimously authorized its national commander to take all “appropriate actions, with other organizations or singly,
up to and including authorizing litigation,” to ensure that the Veterans Disability Benefits Commission does NOT attempt
to erode veterans disability benefits by offsetting them with the Social Security disability system. Members of the
National Executive Committee of The American Legion passed a resolution giving National Commander Thomas L. Bock full authority
to work with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and other organizations to block a blatant attempt by the commission that
could propose termination of veterans’ disability benefits when a veteran obtains a job despite a militarily incurred
disability. “Disability benefits are and should remain totally separate and subject to separate rules because Social
Security benefits are the result of insurance premiums which constitute part of the Social Security tax and veterans benefits
are earned for taking up the burdens of the nation,” Bock said. “Veterans subjected themselves to the mental
and physical hazards, as well as the economic and family detriments, which are unique to military service.” The Veterans
Disability Benefits Commission is considering whether Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) should or should not be
included in its analysis of benefits provided under current federal laws to compensate veterans and their survivors for disability
or death attributable to military service. “Making veterans’ benefits subject to the rules and laws pertaining
to the Social security system or similar rules allowing the end of benefits because the veteran has found a job, offsetting
veterans benefits with Social Security Disability payments or turning veterans benefits into a transitional assistance program
is flat-out wrong,” Bock said. “The American Legion will work with DAV and any other organization with a
common goal, jointly or separately as appropriate, to accomplish The American Legion’s traditional goal of preserving,
protecting and enhancing veterans benefits and preventing the erosion or destruction of these hard-earned benefits.” Abel

VA Disability Commission May (SOON) Punish Disabled Vets
DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS Building Better Lives
for America's Disabled Veterans _______________________________________________________ Commission May Punish Disabled
Vets By Arthur H. Wilson, National Adjutant
Ever since legislation creating the Veterans? Disability Benefits Commission
was passed, there have been concerns about whether the deck is stacked against veterans. And after a year of meetings, site
visits, field hearings and public comment, it is still an open question. That?s understandable, considering the political
climate in which the commission operates.
The 13-member panel was established after some rather heavy-handed attempts
at sweeping changes to veterans disability compensation failed in Congress. However, the same political forces are still at
work, both on and off Capitol Hill, making it difficult for disabled veterans to remain optimistic about the outcomes.
Optimism
was in short supply at the commission?s March 16-17 meeting as some of its members maneuvered to authorize collecting data
about Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits paid to veterans who also receive VA disability compensation. That
was done with a view toward an offset of disability insurance if the veteran receives disability compensation from the VA.
A
move to sidestep proper procedures and hold a secret ballot on the matter was postponed, but the issue is expected to resurface
at the commission?s meeting in May. If so, it could lay the groundwork for cutting or eliminating veterans benefits as a way
of saving the government money.
The idea that disability compensation is some kind of income security or welfare program
cheapens the service and sacrifice of disabled veterans. That kind of thinking might also open the door to cutting off VA
compensation when a disabled veteran becomes eligible for Social Security retirement benefits.
Veterans benefits are
separate and distinct from Social Security, so receiving payments under both programs is not dual compensation for the same
disability, as some have tried to argue.
Service-connected disability compensation from the VA is an earned benefit,
awarded only on the basis of eligibility to a special class of persons. Payments under this program are recompense from the
government for the life-long effects and consequences of a disabled veteran?s extraordinary sacrifice in service to our nation.
And a service-connected disability doesn?t magically disappear when a veteran has a job, either.
SSDI benefits, on
the other hand, are not compensation for a disability, but rather cash payments to a person who is unable to work for a year
or more because of a disability. Most U.S. workers who have paid Social Security taxes are covered by the program. Benefits
usually continue until the person is able to work again on a regular basis. When a person receiving Social Security disability
benefits reaches retirement age, those benefits automatically convert to Social Security retirement benefits.
Rather
than protecting the public purse, implementing a policy regarding offsets to VA disability compensation and Social Security
disability and retirement benefits would have the effect of punishing disabled veterans. I can think of no greater insult
to the men and women whose service and sacrifice have kept America free and safe. We are mindful that this is only in the
discussion stage, but I would hope that the Veterans? Disability Benefits Commission would reject even the suggestion of such
an ill-advised scheme.

USS ARIZONA Marine Remembrance At Pearl Harbor
UPDATE: We saved the Marine
Corps Rememberance Memorial in Pearl Harbor From The National Park Service.
UPDATE: A couple
of years ago, I was the Operations Officer for the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, on the waterfront between the USS ARIZONA
and the USS BOWFIN. The Commandant of the Marine Corps was the featured speaker at the dedication of the USS ARIZONA Marine
Remembrance, 10 November 2006. The National Park Service, which administers the USS ARIZONA Memorial is renovating all of
Halawa Landing, the site of the Marine Remembrance. The Regional Director of the Natl Park Service Western Region, Jon Jarvis,
stated on the local TV news that the Marine Remembrance would be removed. I challenged him on that statement and convinced
him that would not happen without a fight. I passed the word to (disabled vet and webmaster) Jack Cunningham (Americans
Working Together), who in turn asked his readership to email Jarvis that the entire USMC would make every effort to have him
relieved of his duties if he moved that monument. I was copied on many of the emails to him from Marines, their friends and
their families that it nearly fried my computer. And...it worked. In order to save his job, Jarvis backed down. The
Remembrance now belongs to the USMC and has its' rightful place in direct view of the USS ARIZONA.

REQUEST:
Dear Senator Oroho,
I'm writing this request (again) on behalf of Jack Cunningham, a former
active duty Marine and Vietnam veteran. Although I've never actually met him in person, simply the fact that he is a
fellow Marine in need of justice, I offer to help him in any way I can. As you may know, Marines are like that.
Marines take care of Marines.
Although I probably don't know all of the facts pertaining to his case against the State
of New Jersey, I know enough to firmly believe that he should be heard in a public forum. His charges are serious.
There are claims of abuse of power and cover-up at the highest level of the State government. When such accusations
are made, I believe the leadership has no other option than to investigate. Until that is done, all that know of him
and his charges will assume that there is indeed a cover-up. Perception is a powerful thing. Hopefully it won't
be counter to the truth, whatever that may be.
If this is allowed to continue to fester, the results will be devastating
on all involved.
If this issue is not addressed soon, my only other option is to forward this to every Marine
website and public forum I can find. That option is not a good one for any of us.
Please do the right thing and
give Jack his "day in court."
Very Respectfully, John R. Bates

Anyone familiar with the Combined Action Platoons of the Vietnam War will understand what's going on here (In Iraq today).
These Marines live, work, sleep, eat and bathe in the same neighborhoods they are helping to stabilize. In doing so, they're
no longer driving in from a forward operating base, or FOB, outside the city and conducting patrols. Instead, they wake up
in the morning, plan a patrol, then walk out into the neighborhood and greet the men and women sweeping their sidewalks or
tending their shops. They're literally swarmed with children wanting a high five or a piece of chocolate. They visit schools,
markets and local infrastructure projects to see how things are going. There are no interrogations or mean faces, just a neighborly
walk through their district to check on the locals who sometimes know them by name.
